Medicare scam alert

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The sheriff in Union County is warning resident of a new scam involving phone workers for Medicare and Medicaid agencies who are trying to get victims’ personal information.

Sheriff Jamie Patton says his office has gotten multiple complaints about scam artists trying to get credit card, bank account, and personal information over the phone.

In two very similar incidents, a man identified himself over the telephone as a government employee in the Medicare/Medicaid Bureau and told the  victims their Medicare cards would soon be changing.

The potential victim was then told in order for the transaction to go smoothly they would need the victim’s bank account information, Patton said.

Patton says his office has also received reports of fraudulent tax returns involving stolen social security numbers and scam attempts involving bogus insurance investigators.

Anyone who feels they may have been the victim of a scam or who has any questions or concerns about scams or the legitimacy of a call, Patton says they can contact Deputy Kim Zacharias at the Sheriff’s Office Crime Prevention Unit at (937)-645-4100 Ext. 4471.
