Newark police investigate double stabbing

NEWARK – Police in Newark are trying to unravel an incident that took place at the site of an abandoned Kroger store on the city’s North Side Monday afternoon that left one man stabbed to death and another in the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

UPDATE 2/14/19 8:31 a.m.: Newark police identify the deceased man as Rodney Peyton and the second man as Michael Culp, who is in serious but stable condition.

Employees told police the men walked into a business in the Indian Valley Plaza on Deo Drive at 4:17 p.m. Monday, suffering from stab wounds and asking for help, said Division of Police spokesman Sgt. Clint Eskins.

A 38-year-old man died of his injuries and Eskins says a 28-year-old went to a Columbus hospital with life-threating injuries.

The men both have recent addresses in the Newark area but their names were are still being withheld pending notification of family members, Eskins said.

Investigators determine that the incident happened on the former site of a Kroger store adjacent to the strip0 mall but the events and motive are still under investigation, Eskins said.
