Road projects in the fast lane

COLUMBUS, Ohio – A host of central Ohio road projects could be on the fast track with money from the Ohio Turnpike.

Governor John Kasich yesterday announced a $3 billion “jobs and transportation” plan that would move several statewide projects up by at least ten years.

“By thinking outside the box we’re attacking Ohio’s highway budget deficit without a tax increase and keeping Ohio’s highways in top condition,” Kasich said.

The plan calls for work to begin in 2015 on the I-270 interchange with U.S. Route 33 and the Route 33 interchange with Winchester Road.

The first phase of construction on the $93.8 million project at I-270 and US 33 in Dublin is now slated to begin in 2015 instead of 2027 or later.

The $48.7 million project to build a new interchange on US 33 in Carroll at Winchester Road in Fairfield County has also been moved up 12 years to 2015.

Elsewhere in the state, plans to widen I-70 in Clark County, a $19 million project could begin as early as next year, instead of 2027.

The long-discussed plan for Cincinnati’s Uptown Interchange project at I-71 and Martin Luther King Drive is on the fast track, with work scheduled to begin within the next two years.
