TV star performs to combat bullying

COLUMBUS, Ohio – A member of the cast of one of the country’s most popular network television shows brings an anti-bullying message to Columbus Saturday night.

Alex Newell, who plays the role of “Wade ʻUniqueʼ Adams” on FOXʼs “Glee,” will perform at the Pink Anti-Bullying Event at Axis Club.

Newell wants to bring a message of inclusion and understanding: “A homo thinks like you, they just fall in love with a different person…A person falls in love with a person, not a gender,” Newell said.

Over the past two years, Newell has gone from a regular high school student, to appearing on one of the hottest series on television.

While “Wade” is a shy, timid, outcast, his alter-ego — “Unique” – has a bold and daring personality, but was a victim of harassment by some of female characters in one episode, Newell said.

Anti-bullying efforts have gained momentum in recent years in the wake of several cases of teen suicide, which could be traced to bullying at school, over social networking websites or both.
