Jerry Helms was bringing food to Donald Bugg, 60, and his brother at their home on N. Ohio Avenue in the Mt. Vernon neighborhood just before 5:00 p.m. when Bugg shot Helms to death and barricaded himself inside the home when police arrived, Sgt. Stanley Latta of the Homicide Unit said.

Columbus and Franklin County Sheriff’s Office SWAT teams responded and began negotiations that ended just after 10:00 p.m. when Columbus SWAT officers entered the home where Bugg fired several shots at officers before shooting himself, Latta said.

Bugg was taken to Grant Medical Center where he died 4:23 a.m. Thursday, Latta said.

Bugg’s brother was not injured and Latta says police do not consider him a suspect.

The incident is being investigated as a murder-suicide.
