What if all of these agents of social change and curers of the ills of society characters, real and fictional, existed in our town? The Fairy Godmother, Tinkerbell, Mary Poppins, Dr. Quinn – Medicine Woman, Joan of Arc, Madame Curie, Mother Teresa, Wonder Woman, Eleanor Roosevelt, the Unsinkable Molly Brown, Erin Brockovich, Amelia Earhart, and Glinda the Good Witch…
Well….in essence, they do.
All of those names evoke bravery, strength of character, the ability to fight (choose one) corruption, poverty, illness, injustice, icebergs, ill-behaved children, enemies of the state, evil step-sisters, the status quo, and bad witches. In other words…they are all…OUTSTANDING WOMEN!
Sunny 95 has just added 20 new names to the 2013 honorees list of OUTSTANDING WOMEN in our community. And they know more than a little about doing the right thing, against all odds, and sometimes turning popular opinion on its ear, and finding the ways and the means to do it. Even when they hear the word “No” (which they have learned to ignore by turning around three times and uttering: “Bibbity, Bobbity, Boo, or incantations to that effect), they soldier on and win their battles.
Not one of these 20 possesses a magic wand or a flying umbrella but all together they have been able to: (take a great big breath now!) Save a baby from a burning building, run missions to Haiti, join boards and act as community volunteers, help homeless vets, carry on her mother’s important work in the fight against breast cancer, wage war on ovarian cancer, teach women to build houses, assist survivors of sex trafficking get a new life and self-respect, stop teen violence, be there for people in her community whether it is for a ride to church or a new home, offer summer respites to low income women, act as a role model despite a leg amputation, raise awareness about multiple myeloma, fight for children’s welfare rights, help seniors who are ill take care of their pets, take food to dogs of homeless people, and work in a global AIDS ministry in Kenya.
And they are right here in Central Ohio…not Oz, not Hollywood, not France.
The missions mentioned above are from the 20 women deservedly honored this year. Now we have a total of 120 Outstanding Women alumna, dating back to when the program began in 2008.

They’re all outstanding – even without their magic capes and pixie dust.
