Laura Stampfle

For Laura Stampfle, duties as a nurse at Independence High School reach far beyond 9 to 5, and far beyond the walls of the Columbus school.

Like most school nurses, Stampfle is a nurturer of health and spirit to students and staff throughout the school. Her expertise, however, goes far deeper than scraped knees and sore throats. She says one of the most rewarding parts of her work is helping to mold students’ lives.

Stampfle serves as leader of the school’s Care Team – a building committee that evaluates students whose academic struggles are the result of external factors – overseeing proper intervention and referrals for students in need.

Three years ago, she initiated “Phenomenal Women,” a new support group for pregnant and parenting teens at the school. in addition to providing them with a healthy lunch every other week, Stampfle has formed partnerships with Ohio Health and Project Linden to bring valuable community resources to

Having volunteered with the Peace Corps in el Salvador for two years, Stampfle learned conversational Spanish. She still uses that skill today, as a volunteer at Faith Mission and two evenings a week at the Whitehall clinic.

Many of her patients are from el Salvador. “i think they’re always surprised and reassured to see a ‘gringa’ who knows their country and language,” she says.

Stampfle has been blessed with a wonderful and healthy family. That is why she helps others.

“if i can impact just one child’s life,” she says. “i am happy.”

Students say Stampfle has made that impact. “She has been a selfless role model,” they say. “if you want to know anything – ask the school nurse.” ▪
