Mary Beittel

It’s one thing to look upon the “forgotten” of society and feel remorse; it takes a very special person with an entirely different set of ethics to actually do something about it.

As CFO and half of the executive team of The Open shelter, Mary Beittel has committed her life’s work to making sure that the homeless persons of Central Ohio feel recognized, cared for and welcomed in the community.

Mary is responsible for over 40 payeeships, all of which are designed to ensure that disabled persons who are not allowed to manage their own social security funds move from homelessness to housed and have the assistance they need to maintain it. Her primary function is to listen carefully and thoroughly care about the people she encounters, then advocate on their behalf with probation officers and the courts, mental health case managers, the social security Administration, utility companies and landlords, and other social service agencies.

Years ago, a fire destroyed her family’s home and everything they owned. They were only able to survive as a result of the concern of a caring neighbor. This tragic life event and the selflessness of her neighbor were the catalysts for the work that she does today. “I do what I do because it is who I am,” she says. “My faith sustains me and the generosity of the community makes our work possible. I have had the opportunity to meet thousands of amazing people who are struggling bravely. They inspire me with their efforts and with the scope of their needs.”
