Police: 1 in custody after reported shot fired at OSU-Newark

Authorities say one person is in custody following reported discharge of a firearm at on the campus of Ohio State University-Newark and Central Ohio Technical College that prompted evacuations of nearby events, but no reports of any injuries.

Faced with the continuing spread of the novel coronavirus, Columbus Mayor Andrew Ginther had ordered face coverings to be worn in public in the city and Gov. Mike DeWine has made them a key part of the state’s requirements for schools to reopen in the fall.

More Ohioans head back to work

Although the number of Ohioans filing initial claims for unemployment benefits rose for a second straight week, the number of those continuing to claim benefits declined, indicating that the state’s economy is still recovering from the sudden downturn brought on by business closings as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Outside investigators to look into police actions

Columbus Mayor Andrew Ginther took three steps forward in his police reform agenda Wednesday, announced the hiring of a law firm and an investigator to look into complaints arising from how the city’s police handled recent protests, and the formation of a group whose job will be to create a civilian review board.

Overdose deaths increase 55%

The Franklin County Coroner reports that overdose deaths jumped significantly from a year ago, and the increase came before most of the stay-at-home orders and business closings were seen as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.
