COLUMBUS – Against a backdrop protests nationwide over police-involved shootings of black men in Louisiana and Minnesota and tension following the ambush-style attack that left five Dallas police officers dead, a Columbus police sergeant fired his weapon at a robbery suspect on the Southeast Side early Monday morning, though there is no indication whether the suspect was hit.
The sergeant pulled into the parking lot of the Speedway gas station, 2755 Brice Road, at 1:42 a.m. and saw an armed man robbing the business, division spokesman Sgt. Rich Weiner said.
The sergeant confronted the gunman as he came out of the building and fired multiple shots at the suspect as he ran to a nearby parking lot where he was picked up by a dark colored vehicle, Weiner said.
Weiner says it is not known if the suspect was wounded during the confrontation. No injuries were reported.
A gun and duffle bag, containing items taken from the robbery, were recovered at the scene Weiner said.
The suspect is described as:
Male (unknown ethnicity)
Approximately 6’4, 190 lbs.
Light colored hooded jacket
Dark face mask
Black gloves
Anyone with information regarding the robbery is asked to call Columbus Police at 614-645-4624.
