COLUMBUS, Ohio – An OSU student has created a microscopic version of the marching band’s signature move: He has created a Script Ohio made of DNA.

Between thesis work and other research, Mike Hudoba, a Ph.D. candidate in OSU’s College of Engineering, started tinkering with DNA origami, in which researchers “program” genetic material to do what they want, melting down bonds between strands and re-creating bonds to form new shapes. –Click photo for full article

There is a practical application for what seems like mere amusement: The Columbus Dispatch reports Hudoba’s adviser — OSU assistant professor Carlos Castro — and another OSU scientist announced this year that they had figured out how to make DNA into tiny robots that could deliver medicine to specific cells.
That could help doctors take aim at diseases instead of using sweeping treatments that destroy good cells along with diseased ones.
