Sentencing in Amish beard-cutting case

CLEVELAND, Ohio – A federal judge is set to sentence the leader of an Amish sect and his followers today, convicted of forcibly cutting the hair and beards of other fellow Amish.

Those acts are seen as degrading to those who consider themselves Amish.

The forced cuttings happened in rural Ohio in 2011.

Prosecutors say they want a life sentence for Samuel Mullet, Sr.

Attorneys for Mullet and his group have already said they will appeal the case no matter the sentence that’s given.

Their appeal is based on the constitutionality of the federal hate crimes law, which they were convicted under.
