Stinky flower ready to bloom again

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The eyes – and noses – of flower enthusiast are again pointed toward Ohio State, where a rare Titan Arum is expected to bloom this week.

This would be an unprecedented third consecutive blooming of the plant (Amorphophallus Titanum), known as the “corpse flower” for its distinctive foul aroma, Biological Sciences Greenhouse manager Joan Leonard said.

The plant named Woody, for legendary football coach Woody Hayes, which first bloomed in April 2011, will bloom again, possible as early as Tuesday.

The curious can check for daily updates, including public visiting hours, and streaming live video.

Woody and four other Titan Arum seeds were planted in November 2001, Leonard said.

Last spring, a second plant – named “Jesse” after OSU and Olympic track star Jesse Owens — bloomed.
