When we describe someone as being “to the manor born,” we think of lineage and aristocracy, and such is certainly the case with trumpeter Pharez Whitted. His father, Thomas Whitted, Sr., played drums for jazz greats Freddie Hubbard and Wes Montgomery; his mother, Virtue Hampton Whitted, was a vocalist and bassist who came to prominence in the ‘40s and ‘50s as a member of the Hampton Family Band and the Hampton Sisters Quartet; and his uncle is the great jazz trombonist, arranger, Grammy-winner and NEA Jazz Master, Slide Hampton. A much-in-demand musician and educator, Pharez Whitted is Director of Jazz Studies at Chicago State University, teaches at Jazz at Lincoln Center, Ravinia’s Jazz Scholars Program and is Jazz Director for Chicago’s Youth Symphony Orchestra.
