Teen among 2 dead in weekend homicides

COLUMBUS – Police were investigating two homicides in Columbus over the weekend.

UPDATE 3/9/22 9:23 a.m.: The victim in this homicide was identified as Brylan Butcher, 14, police announced.

Officers found the teen shot to death in an alley in the 300 block of S. Terrace Avenue on the Hilltop at 7:54 a.m. Saturday, Sgt. David Shimberg of the homicide unit said.

This is the 20th homicide in Columbus in 2022, Shimberg said.

A 55-year-old man was under arrest on a murder charge in the stabbing death of another man during a dispute involving roommates in the North Linden home Sunday, Shimberg said.

James Lumpkin Jr., is accused in the fatal stabbing of John Malinchak, who was found lying in the street in the 1500 block of Republic Avenue just before 5:10 p.m. on a stabbing incident.

The 33-year-old Lumpkin was unresponsive and died shortly after arrival at Ohio Health Grant Medical Center.

He was the 21st homicide of the year in Columbus.

Shiimberg says this incident is still under investigation.
