2 dead in wrong-way crash on I-71

Sunny 95I-71 was closed between I-270 and 17th Ave. for several hours Monday morning due to a fatal crash involving a wrong-way driver.

COLUMBUS – Two men were killed in a wrong-way traffic crash on I-71 near the Ohio Expo Center on the Northeast Side early Monday.

Columbus police say Christopher Hughes was driving his 2012 Subaru Outback northbound in the southbound lanes of the interstate between 17th Avenue and Hudson Street at 3:15 a.m. when he struck a southbound Honda CRV head-on.

The driver of the Honda, 53-year-old Curtis Thompson, of Columbus, was pronounced dead at the scene and Hughes, 42, was taken to Grant Medical Center where he died shortly before 6:30 a.m., police said.

A passenger in the Honda, 51-year-old Shawna Towns-Thompson, was listed in stable condition at Grant Medical Center.

The southbound lanes of the freeway were closed from I-270 on the North Side to 17th Avenue during the investigation, which is still ongoing.
