COLUMBUS – Columbus is on the verge of matching a grim statistic: the city is now one homicide short of tying last year’s all-time record of 175 homicides.

Police say the 174th murder victim of 2021 was a 16-year-old gunned down on the East Side Thursday night, Sgt. David Shimberg of the Homicide Unit said.

Officers found Rycheous McKinney suffering from a gunshot wound in the rear of an address in the 2000 block of Willamont Avenue just before 9:00 p.m.

He was taken to OhioHealth Grant Medical Center in critical condition and, despite receiving medical treatment, died at 9:32 p.m., Shimberg said.

Investigators are still trying to determine the circumstances associated with the shooting and are looking for persons of interest, Shimberg said.

Anyone with information regarding the incident is asked to call the Homicide Unit at 614-645-4730 or Central Ohio Crime Stoppers at 614-461-TIPS (8477).
