COLUMBUS — The Columbus soccer team restored “Crew” to its name after fans objected to a rebranding that had dropped it.
The team announced that the franchise would retain the name after meeting Monday with team supporters, who widely opposed dropping the name and rebranding it as Columbus SC.
The rebranded crest also will be changed to include the Crew name.
The fans’ group Nordecke voiced support for the change, which will include Columbus Crew as a part of the new team crest and the number “96,” which will be placed inside the outline of the Ohio state flag, recognizing the club’s status as the founding member in Major League Soccer.
Supporters took to social media to criticize the rebranding after it was announced.
