COLUMBUS – The Columbus Crew defeated Mexico City’s Deportivo Cruz Azul 2-0 to win the 2021 Campeones Cup, the annual competition between the reigning MLS Cup and LIGA MX champions.
The Crew became the first team to post a shutout in the history of the cup.
The match was the first international competition held at Lower.com Field.
Lucas Zelarayan’s free kick resulted in an own goal that put the Crew in front at four minutes and Jonathan Mensah’s 74th-minute header sealed the victory.
Columbus is the second consecutive MLS team to win the trophy after Atlanta United defeated Club America 3-2 in 2019. The 2020 match was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
