German Village shootout ends in man’s death

COLUMBUS – A deadly shooting in German Village late Wednesday may have been a case of self-defense.

No charges had been filed early Thursday in the 164th homicide of 2021 in Columbus, the death of a 32-year-old man in an apparent exchange of gunfire in the 600 block of Lazelle Street, Sgt. James Marable of the Columbus Police Homicide Unit said.

UPDATE 10/11/21 9:25 a.m.: The deceased victim in this incident has been identified by police as Marcus George, 32.

Officers were called to the scene at 11:32 p.m. on a report of a shooting found two men suffering from apparent gunshot wounds, Marable said.

One of the men died at Grant Medical Center and the other was listed in critical condition.

The second shooting victim was a 36-year-old man who told police that the younger man approached him and shot him in the leg.

The older man said he was a concealed-weapon permit holder who drew his own weapon and the two men exchanged gunfire.

During the exchange the younger man was fatally wounded.

Two handguns were recovered at scene, Marable said.

The dead man’s name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin and the case is being forwarded to the Franklin County Prosecutor’s office for review, Marable said.
