COLUMBUS – A 9-year-old girl is recovering from a gunshot wound after being shot in the chest at a home on the South Side Wednesday afternoon.
The shooting came hours after the city’s 66th homicide of the year, a 54-year-old man shot in the parking lot of an East Linden-area gas station.
When officers responding to a report of someone being shot in the 1800 block of S. 5th Street at 4:49 p.m., they found the girl, who told them she was opening the door when she heard fireworks or gunshots just before something struck her in the chest, Sgt James Marable said.
She was listed in stable condition.
The victim didn’t see who was shooting.

Police responding to a shooting incident at 2785 Brentnell Avenue at 6:26 a.m. found Herbert Earley III inside of a silver vehicle, Sgt. Eric Pilya said.
Earley was rushed to OhioHealth Grant Medical Center where he was pronounced dead at 7:03 a.m.
Investigators determine that Earley victim and another person were sitting on the lot of the Sunoco station at 1799 E. Hudson Street when black SUV pulled onto the lot and someone inside began firing into the vehicle before driving off.
The motive behind the shooting is unknown.
