Man shot, killed on Statehouse lawn

COLUMBUS – Authorities say a person was shot and killed on the grounds of the Statehouse Sunday night, one of several violent incidents in central Ohio over the long Memorial Day weekend.

UPDATE 6/1/22 7:49 a.m.: This article has been edited to include additional information about a shooting in Galloway and a deputy-involved shooting in Union County.

Columbus police and Ohio State Highway Patrol officers responded to gunshots at the northwest corner of the statehouse grounds at about 10:00 p.m. Sunday and found a male victim wounded.

Officers tried to revive the victim but he was pronounced dead shortly afterward, highway patrol spokesperson Brice Nihiser said.

The victim wasn’t immediately identified.

Nihiser said the shooting wasn’t related to any official business at the Ohio Statehouse, where the highway patrol provides security.

Two people were killed in Columbus on Sunday, raising the total number of homicides in the city this year to 52.

Trey Glover, 32, was found at approximately 3:19 a.m. by officers dispatched to the 700 Block of Gibbard Avenue on a report of shots fired call, Sgt. Edward Powell III of the homicide unit said.

The officers were first directed to a porch where a 21-year-old man was found suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. He was listed in critical condition.

Glover was found a few houses away and was pronounced dead at the scene by Columbus paramedics.

A 62-year-old man was shot to death in the 2100 Block of Hamilton Avenue at approximately 6:59 a.m., Powell said.

These incidents are still under investigation.

Two shot in Galloway home invasion

Two men were killed late Friday night when they were shot inside a home in Galloway by intruders during an apparent robbery attempt, according to Franklin County Sheriff Dallas Baldwin.

Trintan Mendoza, 19, of Columbus, and 21-year-old Francisco De Jesus Rodriguez, of Galloway, had recently lived at the home on Idlebrook Place in Prairie Township and were shot multiple times by two men who broke into the home at approximately 11:35 p.m., detectives said.

They were pronounced dead at the scene by Prairie Township Fire Department medics.

The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office Detective Bureau is investigating.

Man killed by deputy in Marysville

Authorities say a man armed with a gun was shot and killed by sheriff’s deputy at a home in Union County.

Two people made separate 911 calls to Marysville police around 6:35 p.m. Monday to report that 33-year-old Matthew Todhunter had pointed a gun at them.

A Union County Sheriff’s Deputy arrived on scene a short time later and soon shot Todhunter, who was taken to a hospital but was pronounced dead there a short time later.

Authorities said Todhunter was struck “multiple times” but did not disclose further details about his injuries.

The deputy, whose name was not released, wasn’t injured in the shooting.

Authorities didn’t say if Todhunter fired any shots during the incident.
