DUBLIN (AP) — Cameron Young remembers meeting Jack Nicklaus for the first time at the U.S. Open three years ago at Pebble Beach.

It was brief. And memorable only for Young.

He’s starting to make a name for himself.

The rookie had a 67 at the Memorial and was part of a six-way tie for the lead after the opening round of the Memorial.

Young finished with two birdies over his last three holes for a 5-under 67 on rain-softened Muirfield Village.

It was his first start since challenging for the PGA Championship.

Joining Young were Luke List, Cameron Smith and K.H. Lee from the morning wave, and Mackenzie Hughes and Davis Riley in the afternoon.

It was the highest score to lead after one round at the Memorial since 2004.

Bryson DeChambeau shot 76 in his first tournament since the Masters because of surgery on his left hand. Harris English made his first start since the Sony Open in January because of hip surgery. He opened with a 77.

Defending champion Patrick Cantlay and Jon Rahm were at 72.

Matsutama disqualified because of paint on club face

Former Memorial champion Hideki Matsuyama is out of the Memorial because of paint on the face of his 3-wood.

Matsuyama had 10 small lines in the shape of a circle on the face.

Alignment help is OK. But the substance can’t be so thick on the surface that it affects the flight of the ball.

PGA Tour officials were made aware of it right after Matsuyama teed off though they didn’t catch up to him until the second hole.

Players can carry non-conforming clubs in their bags. They just can’t use them.

The 2014 Memorial winner used the 3-wood for his opening tee shot.
