COLUMBUS – Columbus police are accusing two men of posing as officers and trying to get into a home on the North Side in September.
DaWayne Mitchell and Tracy Murray knocked on the door of a home in the area near Cleveland Avenue and I-270 at 3:11 a.m. on Sept. 20, identifying themselves as “CPD” and demanding to be let in to “ask some questions,” according to investigators with the Columbus Police Property Crimes Bureau.

Mitchell, 20, in possession of what appears to be a semiautomatic handgun, knocked on the door several times, saying he was with the Columbus police and asking the resident to open the door, detectives said.
The resident questioned Mitchell’s identity through a Ring doorbell and asked to see a badge and Mitchell told the man he is not required to show a badge and again asked the resident to open the door.
“We would like you to step to the door, sir. I don’t have to show you my badge, sir,” Mitchell is heard to say on the Ring camera’s video.
The two men then switched positions and Murray, 23, then also said, “CPD open the door.”
A detective with the Property Crimes Bureau worked with a police intelligence analyst to identify both suspects and police issued summonses for Mitchell and Murray on charges of impersonation of an officer.
