COLUMBUS – The Ohio State Fair may have been cancelled by the coronavirus pandemic, but an effort is underway to keep one of its most enduring traditions alive.

The American Dairy Association Mideast is sponsoring a “virtual butter cow” contest, encouraging Ohioans to build their own butter cow.

The association has posted a how-to video on its website.

Through the DIY Butter Cow Challenge, one winner will win a YETI cooler.

Participants will need: a pair of latex gloves, a 12” X 6” wooden board, and at least two pounds of butter, compared with the ton or more of butter usually used to create the annual display

From July 28 through Aug. 9, novice sculptors are encouraged to comment with a photo of their butter cow on ADA Mideast’s Facebook page or share their image with #BuildYourButterCow on ADA Mideast’s Twitter or Instagram.

The winning sculpture will be announced Aug. 10.
