COLUMBUS – Columbus police say 11 people were arrested or cited, two of them on felony drugs and weapons charges, during the first “Operation Wheels Down,” an effort to get speeding ATVs and dirt bikes off city streets.
In response to complaints about the vehicles racing on streets in and around Columbus, the Columbus Division of Police partnered with the Franklin County Sherriff’s Office and the City Attorney’s Office on the crackdown that began Saturday.
Authorities arrested or handed out summonses to 11 individuals for offenses like driving while impaired, reckless operation or driving without a license and cited two more people for traffic violations, Division of Police spokesman Sgt. James Fuqua said.
Two of the arrests were on felony charges of aggravated possession of drugs and carrying a concealed weapon and a stolen firearm was confiscated, Fuqua said.
One of the individuals arrested was a wanted felon who was charged with receiving stolen property, obstructing and failure to comply.
Another was a missing person from a nearby county.
Nine ATVs and dirt bikes were impounded as evidence, Fuqua said.
