Shootings claim 6 lives in Columbus over holiday weekend

COLUMBUS – Six people died in deadly shooting incidents in Columbus over the Fourth of July weekend, including an elderly couple who were the victims of an apparent murder-suicide.

At least four teens died in other shooting incidents around Ohio during the holiday weekend.

The number of homicides in Columbus rose to 105 with the death of a 19-year-old man on the South Side early Monday. Sincere Akers, 19, was dropped off at Nationwide Children’s Hospital, where he died as the result of a gunshot wound just before 1:15 a.m., Sgt. David Shimberg of the Homicide Unit said. Investigators say callers reported the shooting happened outside an address in the 1100 block of Wilson Avenue.

The weekend of violence in Columbus began just before 5:30 Friday morning when an unidentified man was found shot to death in a grassy area in the 600 block of Van Buren Drive on the Southwest Side. Investigators believe the man, whose name was withheld pending confirmation and notification of next-of-kin, was shot during an argument, Shimberg said.

UPDATE 7/7/21 7:47 a.m.: The victim in the homicide on Van Buren Dr. has been identified as Eric Jackson, 49.

An elderly Northeast Side couple died Friday afternoon, the result of an apparent murder-suicide. A 72-year-old man shot his wife to death and turned the gun on himself, Sgt. James Marable said.

A man found bleeding on the floor of an apartment on Wedgewood Drive on the Hilltop just before 2:00 a.m. Saturday was pronounced dead at the scene, Sgt. Edward Powell said. Dustin Lacey, 33, became the 103rd homicide victim of 2021 in Columbus.

Officers responding to a report that a body had been found in an alley behind 2917 Azelda Street at 7:10 a.m. Sunday found Raymond English, 35, who was pronounced dead at the scene, the 104th homicide victim of the year, Sgt. Eric Pilya of the Homicide Unit said.

Five other people, including a woman and two men shot in an incident at the corner of Brehl and Sullivant Avenues on the West Side, were shot in other incidents.

Teen Killed in Toledo shooting

Police say gunfire during a Fourth of July block party left one teenager dead and 11 other people wounded in Toledo.

The police chief says most of the injured victims were teenagers while the youngest was 11.

He says the one person who died was a 17-year-old boy. Two others are in critical condition.

2 Teenagers Dead, 3 Wounded in Shooting at Cincinnati Park

Police say two teenagers are dead after apparently exchanging gunfire that wounded three others at a downtown Cincinnati park where hundreds of teens were gathered late on the Fourth of July.

The police chief says the teens who died had an existing dispute and others may have been involved, but officers aren’t searching for any particular suspects.

Officials say a 17-year-old girl was shot in the back and left in critical condition. Two other teenagers suffered gunshot wounds to their arms.

13-year-old Killed in Dayton

Authorities in Dayton say a teenage girl died after she was hit by gunfire during a gun battle between two people at a holiday weekend party.

Officers were called at about 2:00 a.m. Monday to a home and found a 13-year-old girl with a gunshot wound.
