Teen among 2 dead in weekend shootings

COLUMBUS – Police have arrested a suspect in the death of a teenager who was shot on the Southeast Side Thursday, one of two people killed in shootings over the weekend in Columbus.

DeVaugh Morgan, 24, was in the Franklin County Jail after detectives with the Columbus police Homicide Unit charged him with murder in the fatal shooting of 17-year-old Yazmink Speer, Sgt. James Marable of the Homicide Unit said.

Speer was shot Thursday afternoon in the 4600 block of Refugee Road and died early Friday at Mount Carmel East Hospital, Marable said.

Columbus has recorded nine homicides this year after a 22-year-old man was gunned down in Mifflin Township early Sunday.

Officers dispatched to the 2600 Block of Divot Place on reported shooting at 2:55 a.m. found Kavyne Cooper suffering from a gunshot wound, Sgt. Edward Powell III said.

He was taken to OhioHealth Grant Medical Center by Mifflin Townships paramedics and died there at 3:24 a.m.
