COLUMBUS – Columbus continues to march toward a record year for homicides, mirroring a nationwide trend of higher murder rates in 2020.

The city saw two murders Tuesday, including that of a 15-year-old, which brought the total for the year to 116. That puts Columbus on a pace to finish 2020 with more than 150 homicides, eclipsing the record of 143 set in 2017.

The teen was found in the area of 4809 Heatherton Drive, on the Northeast Side, at 3:08 p.m. by Columbus police officers responding to a report of a shooting, according to Sgt. James Marable of the Homicide Unit.

Clinton Township paramedics transported the youth to Grant Medical Center where he was pronounced dead just before 4:00 p.m.

It is unknown at this time what led to the shooting, but Marable says witnesses report a silver Chrysler 300 fled the scene eastbound on Trent Road toward Northtowne Boulevard immediately after the incident.

At approximately 9:45 p.m., officers responding to a shooting at the intersection of E. Whittier Street and Gilbert Street on the South Side found Jaleel Carter-Tate in front of a residence, suffering from a gunshot wound. The 25-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene, detectives said.

Anyone with information regarding these incidents is asked to call the Columbus Police Homicide Unit at 614-645-4730 or Central Ohio Crime Stoppers at 614-461-TIPS (8477).
