COLUMBUS – A 15-year-old is under arrest for a double shooting outside a West Side recreation center last week that left one woman dead and another injured.

The boy has been charged with murder and felonious assault in the shooting outside the Glenwood Community Center last Wednesday and was taken to the Franklin County Court of Domestic Relations pending arraignment, according to Sgt. Edward Powell III of the Columbus police homicide unit.

Police credited members of the community with providing information leading to the arrest of the youth in the death of Atayia Nichols, 24, Powell said.

Nichols died at Grant Medical Center after apparently being shot during a fight that broke out at approximately 5:46 p.m. Wednesday outside the facility in the 1800 block of Fairmont Avenue, which was being utilized as a cooling center during an intense heat wave, Powell said.

This was the 59th homicide of the year in Columbus.

An 18-year-old woman was in critical condition at Grant Medical Center and was expected to survive, Powell said.

The suspect was located a short distance away and was taken to OSU Wexner Medical Center in critical condition, Powell said.
