Teenage girl shot to death outside East Side rec center

COLUMBUS – A 17-year-old girl was killed when shots were fired outside a recreation center Thursday night, the 96th homicide victim of 2021 in Columbus.

Most of the witnesses fled after the shooting but those who remained at the scene told investigators that a large group of young people had gathered near the Far East Recreation Center 1826 Lattimer Drive just before 8:45 p.m. when shots were fired and Makenzi Ridley was fatally injured, Sgt. James Marable of the Columbus police Homicide Unit.

Officers called to the recreation center at 8:44 p.m. found Ridley suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. She was taken to Mount Carmel East Hospital in critical condition and died at 9:17 p.m., Marable said
