Weekend violence leaves one dead

COLUMBUS – Nine people were shot, one of them fatally, during a violent culmination to the three-day Labor Day weekend.

UPDATE 9/8/21 7:26 a.m.: Police released the name of the man who was shot to death on the Southeast Side Monday night.

Columbus police officers found Donnie Ferguson suffering from multiple gunshot wounds in the 2100 block of Haviland Drive just before 10:15 p.m., Sgt. David Shimberg of the Homicide Unit said.

Despite receiving life-saving medical treatment, Ferguson, 43, died later at a hospital, the 143rd homicide victim of 2021 in Columbus.

The initial information indicated that Ferguson had been involved in a confrontation earlier in the evening that may have led to the shooting, Shimberg said.

Eight other people were shot in a half dozen other incidents between Sunday morning and early Tuesday.

Teen arrested in brother’s death

A 16-year-old boy was arrested in the fatal shooting of his 17-year-old brother Thursday on the Far West Side, police said.

John Van Ram Cung and Joseph Lian were fighting at a home in the 6000 block of Joliff Street when Cung produced a handgun and shot his older brother several times.

Lian died later at OSU Wexner Medical Center, according to Sgt. Edward Powell III of the Homicide Unit.

Murder victim identified

Police have released the name of a man who was shot to death on the Hilltop last month.

Brandon Slate, 30, was found lying in the front yard of a home in the 700 block of S. Highland Avenue on Aug. 21 and died later at at OhioHealth Grant Medical Center, detectives said.

Police have not released any information on a suspect or motive in the case.
