COLUMBUS – Police say a woman was shot to death when several people opened fire on her and a male companion as they sat inside a vehicle on an East Side street Thursday night.

Courtney Bruce was pronounced dead shortly after she was brought into Mount Carmel East Hospital by Cameron Lockhart at 6:00 p.m., Sgt. James Marable of the Columbus police Homicide Unit said.

Detectives believe Bruce, 26, and Lockhart, 25, were in a car in the 3700 block of Dort Place when Lockhart says they were assaulted by a group of males armed with handguns and Bruce was wounded when several shots were fired, Marable said.

This was the 75th homicide of the year in Columbus.

Three other people, including a 14-year-old boy, were shot in separate incidents Thursday night and Friday morning, police said.

CORRECTION: This article has been edited to reflect a report that the 14-year-old victim went initially to Mount Carmel Franklinton, not Mount Carmel West as reported in the police statement.

The teen was at Mount Carmel Franklinton emergency room with an eye injury after Sgt. Doug Jones says the boy was shot in the area of 750 Canonby Place just after 9:00 p.m.

A 24-year-old Merion Village man was arrested at his home on Bruck Street shortly after police say he shot two men in the 1200 block of S. High Street at 2:15 a.m.

One man was shot in the foot while the other suffered a minor injury in the upper arm, police said.
