COLUMBUS – The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium announced Wednesday that it has been granted accreditation by the Zoological Association of America after losing its accreditation by another leading organization over financial irregularities blamed on former executives.

The Columbus zoo is one of the largest of the more than 60 facilities accredited by Zoological Association of America. (Gram S. Jones/Columbus Zoo & Aquarium)

The accreditation followed a four-day, on-site inspection in March by a committee from the international association of public and private facilities of wildlife educators, rescue facilities, TV and film industry animal experts, wildlife preserves, small community zoos, large zoological facilities, aquariums, and conservation organizations.

“It is important for the larger zoological community to work together in all aspects to protect the profession and ensure institutions are meeting all best practices standards,” Tom Schmid, president and CEO of the Columbus Zoo Family of Parks, said.

“Meeting or exceeding all accreditation standards only benefits the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium at every level and supports our commitment to fulfilling our mission to lead and inspire by connecting people and wildlife,” Schmid said.

The zoo was stripped of its AZA accreditation last year after 40 years of being recognized by the organization and becomes one of the largest of the more than 60 facilities accredited by ZAA.

Accreditation is granted based on the quality of the facility, husbandry and animal care practices, animal welfare and well-being, record keeping, knowledge of personnel, animal nutrition, security, veterinary care, safety plans and risk management, Schmid said.
